Fix an upload error or a link that isn't working

Each section starts with the message or behaviour you see, explains the rule behind it, and ends with the fix. The first 10 are upload problems, roughly in order of how often people meet them. The rest cover links and settings that don't behave the way you expect.

"This file is over 25MB" and other size limits

What you see

A card that shows your file's size on a bar against your plan's limit, and the plan that would take it.

Your planWhat the card says
No account"This file is over 25MB", then "Uploads without an account stop at 25MB, and so does the free plan. Pro takes files up to 250MB, so this one fits." The button reads "Get Pro".
Free"This file is over your 25MB limit", then "The free plan stops at 25MB per file. Pro takes files up to 250MB, so this one fits." The button reads "Upgrade to Pro".
Pro"This file is over your 250MB limit", then "Pro stops at 250MB per file. Studio takes files up to 1GB, so this one fits." The button reads "Upgrade to Studio".
Studio"This file is over your 1GB limit", then "Studio takes files up to 1GB, the most any NudgeHost plan takes, so no upgrade fits this file." The button reads "Choose another file".

Without an account or on Free, a file between 250MB and 1GB is offered Studio, and the message ends "Pro stops at 250MB. Studio takes files up to 1GB, so this one fits." A file over 1GB on any plan below Studio gets "This file is over 1GB" and "No NudgeHost plan takes a file this large. Studio, the largest, stops at 1GB per file."

From the API or an AI tool, the same refusal reads like this:

  • "That file is over the 25MB limit on the free plan. Pro takes files up to 250MB. See https://www.nudgehost.com/pricing."
  • "That file is over the 250MB limit on Pro. Studio takes files up to 1GB. See https://www.nudgehost.com/pricing."
  • "That file is over 1GB, the most any NudgeHost plan takes, so no plan can upload it. Try a smaller file."

Why it happens

Each plan has a size limit per file, checked before any of the file is sent. It's 25MB without an account, 25MB on Free, 250MB on Pro and 1GB on Studio. A ZIP has to fit twice. The archive must be under the limit, and so must the total of its files once unpacked. Pasted text has its own limit of 2 MB.

What to do

Make the file smaller, for example by exporting a PDF with lower image quality, or split it into parts. Files up to 250MB fit on the Pro plan, and Studio takes files up to 1GB. On Pro, the Studio button changes your plan in place, and the card says "Today you pay the difference for the rest of your month. Your renewal date stays the same." It says "year" on a yearly plan. For pasted text over 2 MB, save it as a file and upload that.

The security check didn't pass

What you see

Uploads without an account pass a quick check from Cloudflare first. If Cloudflare wants you to tick a box, a line above the box reads "Tick the box below to finish your upload." If the check fails, the card is headed "That upload did not go through" and shows one of these messages:

MessageButtons
"The security check did not finish. Please try again."Try again with this file
"The security check box wasn't ticked in time. Please try again and tick the box when it appears."Try again with this file
"The security check expired before the upload started. Please try again."Try again with this file
"The security check could not confirm this browser. Please try again, or sign in, since signed-in uploads skip the check."Try again with this file, Sign in
"We could not verify your browser. Please refresh the page and try again."Try again with this file

A different card, headed "The security check can't run in this browser", says one of the two things below. Its buttons are "Create a free account" and "Sign in", with a small "Try again" link.

  • "Uploads without an account need a quick check from Cloudflare, and something in this browser is blocking it. Signed-in uploads skip the check, and a free account is enough."
  • "Uploads without an account need a quick check from Cloudflare that this browser doesn't support. Signed-in uploads skip the check, and a free account is enough."

Why it happens

The check runs before any of your file is sent, and it has usually finished by the time you drop the file. The can't-run card means the check never loaded, usually because a content blocker stopped challenges.cloudflare.com, or Cloudflare reported that this browser can't run it. "We could not verify your browser" means Cloudflare refused the check's answer when the upload started.

What to do

  • If a box appears, tick it. The page scrolls it into view when an upload is waiting on it.
  • For the first four messages, press "Try again with this file", which runs a fresh check.
  • "We could not verify your browser" clears more often after a page refresh.
  • On the can't-run card, allow challenges.cloudflare.com in your content blocker and press Try again.
  • Signed-in uploads skip the check entirely, and a free account is enough for that.

"Something interrupted the upload"

What you see

"That upload did not go through", then "Something interrupted the upload. Please try again." It often appears after the progress bar has started to move.

Why it happens

The file travels from your browser straight to our storage, and this message means that transfer broke off. Either the browser got no answer, the connection dropped, or no data moved for 60 seconds. NudgeHost retries once by itself on a fresh upload address before it shows you the message.

What to do

Press "Try again with this file". The retry keeps the link name you chose. If it fails twice on the same connection, try a different one, such as a phone hotspot in place of an office network or a VPN.

"Your free plan is full"

What you see

A card headed "Your free plan is full" that says "Your free plan holds 5 active links at a time. Pro has no limit on links." It shows Pro's price, $12 / month, an "Upgrade to Pro" button and two small links, "Manage your links" and "Choose another file".

From the API or an AI tool, the message is "You have reached 5 active links on your free plan. Delete one or upgrade to add more."

Replacing a file or changing a link's settings can show "Your free plan is holding more than 5 links, so changes to files are paused until you are back to 5. Delete a link or upgrade to make changes again."

Why it happens

The free plan holds 5 active links at a time. Free accounts made before 27 October 2026 keep 10 active links. Those accounts see 10 in the messages above. Deleted links don't count. An upload that started and never finished holds a slot for 1 hour. Changes to existing links pause only when an account holds more than its limit, which happens when a paid plan ends.

What to do

Delete a link you no longer need from your dashboard, then upload again. Pro and Studio have unlimited active links.

"That file looks empty"

What you see

"That upload did not go through", then "That file looks empty. Please pick another file."

Why it happens

Your browser reported the file's size as 0 bytes, so there was nothing to send.

What to do

Open the file on your computer and check that it has content. Save or export it again, then pick the new copy.

Back to the list of problems

"We could not start that upload" after several retries

What you see

After a few presses of "Try again with this file", the card says "We could not start that upload. Please try again."

Why it happens

Each retry asks for a fresh upload address for the same attempt, and an attempt that has used up its addresses is closed.

What to do

Press the button once more. The next press starts a new upload of the same file. If that one stops with "Something interrupted the upload", the section on that message covers the cause.

A ZIP that won't unpack

What you see

The transfer finishes, then the upload stops with a message about the ZIP.

Why it happens

NudgeHost unpacks the archive once and checks every entry before any of it goes live. Files your computer adds by itself (__MACOSX, .DS_Store, Thumbs.db, desktop.ini) are skipped and don't count toward any limit.

What to do

MessageFix
"That ZIP holds too many files. The limit is 200 files per site."Remove files the site never loads, such as source files and unused images, then zip again.
"The unpacked site is bigger than the file size limit on your plan. Try a smaller build or upgrade for more room."Bring the unpacked total under your plan's size limit. On Studio, the message ends "Try a smaller build."
"That ZIP is password protected. Please upload an unprotected ZIP."Zip the folder again without a password.
"That ZIP contains another ZIP inside it. Please unpack it and zip just the site files."Unpack the inner ZIP and zip the site folder on its own.
"That ZIP contains a symbolic link, which sites cannot include."Replace the shortcut with a copy of the real file.
"That ZIP contains an unsafe file path, so it was not unpacked."Rename any file whose path starts with a slash or a drive letter, contains a backslash or a .. folder, or runs past 900 characters.
"We could not read that ZIP file. Please re-zip the folder and try again."Zip the folder again with your system's built-in tool.

"Your sign-in has expired"

What you see

A card with that heading, the message "Your sign-in has expired. Please sign in again to upload this file." and a "Sign in" button.

Why it happens

The page still showed you as signed in, but your session had ended, often in a tab left open for a long time. NudgeHost refreshes the session once by itself before it shows this card.

What to do

Sign in again, then upload the file.

Back to the list of problems

"Too many uploads from your network"

What you see

A card with that heading and "This network has hit the hourly limit for uploads without an account. Waiting an hour clears it. Signing in removes the limit." The buttons are "Start over" and "Sign in".

Why it happens

Without an account, one network can start 10 uploads an hour. Every attempt counts, including ones the security check stopped, and everyone on a shared office or school network draws from the same count.

What to do

Wait an hour, or sign in. Uploads from an account have no hourly limit.

Back to the list of problems

A ZIP opens as a download instead of a site

What you see

The link shows a "Download this file" card where you expected a website.

Why it happens

A ZIP becomes a site only when it contains a file named index.html, in any folder. A file named index.htm doesn't count. A ZIP over 100MB is never unpacked, so it stays a download on every plan.

What to do

Name your start page index.html and zip the folder again. If the archive holds more than one index.html, NudgeHost serves the one closest to the top, and on a tie it picks the one inside a dist, build or out folder. If the link already exists in your account, replace the file from your dashboard and the address stays the same.

Back to the list of problems

An HTML page loads, but parts of it don't work

What you see

The page appears, but something on it fails. Typical cases are a button that should save your progress, a pop-up message, an image, or a link to a second page.

Why it happens

A single HTML file runs inside a sandboxed frame. Scripts, forms and new windows work there, and so do scripts and styles loaded from other sites. Four things are blocked:

  • saving anything in the browser, such as cookies or localStorage
  • alert(), confirm(), prompt() and print()
  • links that try to replace the whole window
  • images, scripts and pages referenced by a relative path, because a single upload has no folder around it

What to do

To fix all four, zip the files and upload the archive with the page named index.html. A ZIP runs as a site at its own nudgehost.site address, with no frame around it, so storage, pop-up messages and relative paths all work.

Back to the list of problems

A file downloads instead of opening

What you see

A "Download this file" card in place of a preview.

Why it happens

NudgeHost opens some file types in the browser and offers the rest as a download:

Opens in the browserDownloads
PDF, Word .docx, CSV and TSV, JSON, Markdown, HTML and pasted textPowerPoint and Excel files, older .doc files and uploaded .txt files
PNG, JPEG, GIF, WebP, AVIF and SVG imagesBMP, TIFF and any image whose contents don't confirm its type
MP4, WebM and MOV videoMKV and AVI video
MP3, WAV, M4A and OGG audioFLAC audio

Any type missing from both columns downloads. So does a .docx over 100MB, or one too large to turn into a page.

A video or audio file in a supported type can still fail in one visitor's browser. That visitor sees "Your browser can't play this video inline. Download it and it will open in your usual player." NudgeHost doesn't convert media.

What to do

Export the file to a type in the first column. Slides and spreadsheets travel well as PDFs. For plain text, use the Paste text tab in place of uploading a .txt file, and the text shows on the page.

Back to the list of problems

A CSV, JSON or Markdown file shows only part of itself

What you see

One of these notes on the page:

  • "Showing first 500 of [total] rows. Download the file for the rest."
  • "This file is over the 10MB in-browser viewing limit, so it downloads instead."
  • "This file is over the 2 MB limit for formatting, so it shows as source. The Download button saves the original."
  • "This file took too long to format, so it shows as source."

Why it happens

The table view shows the first 500 rows of a CSV. CSV and JSON files over 10MB skip the viewer and download. Markdown is formatted up to 2 MB, and a file that takes more than 4 seconds to format shows as source. In a formatted Markdown file, images never load, and links work only on files uploaded from an account.

What to do

Nothing is lost. The Download button at the top of every link saves the full original file.

A custom domain isn't serving your site

What you see

The domain panel shows a badge other than "Live", or the domain shows a 404 page.

Why it happens

Pro and Studio let you use your own domain, with 1 domain on Pro and 5 on Studio. It works only for a link that is a ZIP site, and only on a subdomain such as files.example.com. A root domain like example.com is refused. A password-protected site never serves on a custom domain, because passwords work on the nudgehost.site address only.

What to do

BadgeFix
"Waiting for DNS"Create the CNAME record the panel shows at your registrar. Some registrars want only the part before your domain (files rather than files.example.com). DNS changes usually show within minutes, though some registrars take longer.
"Waiting for verification"The domain is set up on another hosting account. Add the extra record the panel shows, then the CNAME.
"Paused"Custom domains are part of the paid plans. Resubscribe within 30 days and the domain serves again with no DNS change.
"Setup did not finish"Remove the domain and add it again.
"Not working"The domain stopped for a reason you can't fix at your registrar. Email support@nudgehost.com.
"Live", but visitors get a 404Check for a password on the site, and remove it to bring the domain back.

A feature asks you to upgrade

What you see

A note in your dashboard where a setting needs a paid plan, or where your plan's allowance of custom domains or API keys is used up.

WhereWhat it says
Password, on Free"Ask for a password before this link opens. Pro adds it to any link for $12 a month." The button reads "Upgrade to Pro".
Custom domain, on Free"Custom domains are part of Pro", then "Your [address] link stays free and keeps working. Pro serves the same site on one domain of your own, with HTTPS set up for you." The button reads "Upgrade to Pro".
Custom domain, Pro at its limit"Studio covers 5 custom domains", then "Your plan covers one custom domain and it is already in use. Remove it to add a different one. Studio also takes files up to 1GB and covers 30 API keys at 150 requests a minute." The button reads "Upgrade to Studio".
API keys, Pro at its limit"Studio covers 30 API keys", then "Your plan covers 10 API keys and you are using 10. Revoke one you are not using to make room, or move to Studio, which also takes files up to 1GB and covers 5 custom domains." The button reads "Upgrade to Studio".
API keys, Free at its limit"Your plan covers 2 API keys and you are using 2. Revoke one you are not using to make room, or move to Pro, which covers 10." There is no button.
Studio at either limit"Your plan covers 5 custom domains and all 5 are in use. Remove one to add another." or "Your plan covers 30 API keys and you are using 30. Revoke one you are not using to make room." There is no button.

Why it happens

Passwords and custom domains come with the paid plans. Each plan also has its own number of custom domains and API keys, and a Pro account that reaches either one is offered Studio.

What to do

The Studio button moves a Pro subscription to Studio straight away, on the billing period you already pay for. You pay the difference for the rest of that period, and the renewal date stays the same. To stay on your plan, remove a domain or revoke a key you no longer use.

Back to the list of problems

"Too many attempts" on a password prompt

What you see

"Too many attempts. Please wait a while and try again."

Why it happens

A password-protected link limits how many tries one IP address can make in 15 minutes.

What to do

Wait 15 minutes, then try the exact password again. If you add a password to your shared link, changing that password later shuts out everyone who opened the link with the old one. A correct password keeps a visitor in for 12 hours on a file link and 24 hours on a site.
