How it works
Swap the file in three steps.
Open File settings
In your dashboard, open File settings on the link you want to update.
Choose the new file
Under Replace, choose the new version. It uploads straight to the link.

The dashboard confirms the swap, and anyone with the link sees the new file on their next visit.
What carries over
Everything but the file stays put.
A replacement swaps the file behind the link. This is what happens to the rest of it.

A replacement can switch the file type, rebuild a site or refresh the preview, and the link people hold keeps working through all of it.
Switch the type
A PDF can become an HTML page, and a ZIP with an index.html becomes a site at the link’s own subdomain, with the old address forwarding there.
Update a site
Replace a zipped site with a new build. The old site’s files are cleared first, so pages you removed don’t linger.
Preview rebuilt
The preview image is rebuilt from the new file. An app that fetched the old card can keep showing it for a while.

Why replace instead of re-upload.
A file you share is rarely the last version of it. A proposal picks up a new price, a mockup comes back with comments, and an export from an AI tool goes through a few rounds before anyone else sees it. When you share a pitch deck with a client and the numbers move the week before the meeting, the client reopens the link they already have and reads the current slides.
A link that has travelled can’t be called back. Once it’s pasted into a group chat, printed as a QR code or saved in someone’s bookmarks, the address is what people have, which is why anyone who has to send a portfolio to a recruiter is better off updating the case study behind the same link. Uploading the new version as a fresh file makes a second link, and deleting the first sends anyone who still holds it to the 404 page a dead link shows.
The new file doesn’t have to match the old one, and a ZIP with an index.html inside replaces as a site built from a ZIP. A replacement has to fit the size ceiling on each plan, the same one any upload meets.

Frequently asked questions
Can I revert to a previous version?
No. Replacing is one-way on every plan, and the previous file is deleted once the new one is in place. Keep your own copy of anything you might want back, and replace again with that copy if you need to.
Is there a limit on how many times I can update a link?
No. You can replace the file behind a link as often as you like, on any account plan, and nothing counts replacements against you.
Can anyone else replace my file?
No. Replace only works from the dashboard of the account that owns the link, so someone holding the URL can open the file but can’t change it.
Can I replace a file on a link that has expired?
Yes. An expired link stays in your dashboard marked Expired, so you can replace its file, and change or clear the end date to open it again.
What does someone see if they have the page open during a replacement?
The version they already loaded. A refresh shows the new file, since the link serves the replacement from the moment it’s in place.
Can I replace a Word document?
Yes. A new .docx is converted to a web page again when it replaces the old one, and Download serves the new Word file.
Can I replace a file through the API?
No. The API publishes, lists and deletes links, and the MCP tools publish and list them. Replacing the file behind an existing link is done in the dashboard.
