Turn on a password

  1. Open your dashboard and find the link under Your files.
  2. Click the settings button in its row. File settings opens.
  3. Turn on Password protection and type the password in the box that says "Set a password".
  4. Click Save. The link stays the same, and anyone who opens it from now on is asked for the password.

Send the password by a different route from the link, so one message alone doesn't open the file. It works on every file type, from a PDF to a ZIP site.

What visitors see

  • A page that says "Enter the password to view" and the file's name, with a password box and an Open file button.
  • A wrong password shows "That password is not right. Please try again."
  • A correct password keeps them in for 12 hours on a file and 24 hours on a site, in the same browser.
  • After 10 wrong tries from one network in 15 minutes, the prompt says "Too many attempts. Please wait a while and try again."
  • When the link is pasted into a chat, the preview shows NudgeHost's general image instead of the file. The file's name still shows as the title.

Change or remove the password

To change it, open File settings, type the new password over "Leave blank to keep current password" and click Save. Everyone who opened the link with the old password has to type the new one.

To remove it, turn Password protection off and click Save. Removing a password works on every plan, so a link you locked on Pro can be opened up again after a move to the free plan.

Sites and custom domains

A password on a ZIP site works on its nudgehost.site address only. A site with a password never serves on a custom domain, so if you point your own domain at a site, leave that site without a password.

On the free plan

The switch shows a Pro label and an Upgrade to Pro button instead. The Pro plan costs $12 a month and adds passwords to every link. The API and the MCP tools can't set a password, so it's always done in the dashboard.

The glossary covers locking a link with a password in general terms, and the troubleshooting guide explains the attempts limit.
