Pro and Studio list the 100 most recent opens, and the CSV holds the full history.

How it works

See your opens in three steps.

  1. Share the link

Send it by email, chat or a LinkedIn message, the way you’d send any link.

  2. Check the count

The Opens column on your dashboard shows how many times each link was opened.

  3. See each open

On Pro and Studio, click the count to see when each open happened and from which country, or download the CSV.

What gets recorded

What an open records

Each open is one row with these fields, and nothing else.

  • Time of the open

When the file page loaded, shown in UTC on the dashboard and in the CSV.

    Recorded, in UTC
  • Country

Worked out from the visitor’s network at country level, never a city.

    Recorded
  • Page, on a zipped site

Which page of the site was viewed, so you can see what people read.

    Recorded
  • IP address

Never written to the record. Only the country it points to is kept.

    Not kept
  • Browser and device

No browser name, operating system or screen size goes into the record.

    Not kept
  • Page that sent the visitor

The record doesn’t say whether they came from an email, a chat or a search.

    Not kept
  • Name or email

Visitors don’t sign in to open a link, so there’s no name to record.

    Never collected
  • Link previews and prefetches

Preview cards in Slack, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and Discord, and browser prefetches, leave the count alone.

Open tracking

Why it stops at when and where.

An open is one load of your link in a browser. When someone clicks it and the file appears, the count goes up by one, and on Pro and Studio the open is saved with its time and country. If you’ve sent your CV as a link, that’s how you know whether a recruiter has looked before you follow up.

The count leaves out requests that aren’t a person reading. Slack, LinkedIn, WhatsApp and Discord fetch a link to draw its preview card, and those fetches don’t count. Neither do browser prefetches, or your own visits to a file link while you’re signed in. On a site uploaded as a ZIP, every page view counts, yours included, because your sign-in doesn’t reach the site’s own address.

Each record holds a time, a country and, for sites, the page. NudgeHost keeps no IP address, browser details or referring page with it, and Google Analytics and Microsoft Clarity, which run on NudgeHost’s own pages, don’t load when someone opens a file link. So the answer to who opened a link is never a name. If only certain people should see the file, put a password on the link. Counts come with every account, and the Pro and Studio plans add the per-open detail and CSV exports.

Frequently asked questions

  • Does a download count as a second open?

No. The open counts when the file page loads, and pressing Download on that page doesn’t add another.

  • How long are open records kept?

Each open’s record is kept for 12 months and then deleted. The link’s total count stays with the link.

  • What happens to the opens if I replace the file?

They stay. Replacing a file keeps its link and its open history, so opens from before and after the change sit in one list.

  • Can I get open counts through the API?

Yes. GET /api/v1/files returns each link’s open count. Per-open records aren’t in the API, so download the CSV from your dashboard for those.

  • What happens to the opens if I delete a link?

The link stops working straight away. Its open records are deleted when they reach 12 months, and until then they still appear in the account-wide CSV.

  • Why is the country missing on some opens?

The country comes from the visitor’s network connection. When it can’t be worked out, the dashboard shows a dash and the CSV leaves the cell empty.
