Why the file gets the whole window.
When someone opens a NudgeHost link, the file takes the window, since the file is what they came for. An HTML page runs live, so HTML that runs its own scripts behaves the way it did on your machine. A Word document is converted to a page when it uploads, which lets people read a Word document without Office.
Formats that aren’t documents get their own treatment. MP4 and MP3 files play in the browser’s built-in player, and the guide to hosting an MP4 video covers what that means for a clip. For data, a JSON file opened as a tree lets the reader fold away what they don’t need.
The viewer is the same on every plan, including for files uploaded without an account. The limits each plan sets cover how many links stay live and how large a file can be.
Frequently asked questions
Does the viewer need an app?
No. The file opens in the browser, and there’s nothing to install for you or for the person you send it to. The layout adjusts to the width of the window.
Will recipients see ads or a banner over the file?
There are no ads. An HTML page or converted Word document uploaded without an account carries a small NudgeHost bar along the bottom, and a free account removes it.
What happens with a CSV or JSON file over 10MB?
It lands on the download card, with a note saying the file is too large to show in the browser. The link still works and the file downloads in full.
Does opening the viewer count as a view?
Yes. Each time someone opens the file in the viewer, the link’s open count goes up by one, apart from link previews in apps like Slack and your own visits while signed in. Every account sees that count, and paid plans also see the time and country of each open.
What does a zipped site look like?
A zipped site skips the viewer. It opens at its own nudgehost.site subdomain as a full website, with no NudgeHost header above it.
Does the viewer work for a password-protected file?
Yes. The visitor enters the password on a NudgeHost page first, and the file then opens in the same viewer as any other link.
Can I hide the NudgeHost header?
Not for a file shown in the viewer. The header carries the filename, the Report link and the Download button on every file. A zipped site skips the viewer and opens without it.
What happens to the header on a narrow window?
It drops the filename and keeps the NudgeHost wordmark, the Report link and the Download button, so the file keeps as much of the screen as possible.
Does the header stay put when the reader scrolls?
Yes. It stays pinned to the top of the window, so Download is always one click away.
